Important Guidelines to choosing a Muslim name

Muslim Names

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and by your father’s names, so give yourselves good names.
Hadith – Bukhari

How a Muslim baby girl  or female should be named

Name of child  bint (i.e daughter  of) name of father

Example 1

If the daughters name is Hafsa and fathers name is Umar the full name of baby girl or female will be:

Hafsa bint Umar     (were Bint = daughter of )

Example  2

Similarly if a Sister converts to Islam and would like  to change her name. She should change her  name as below.

If her name is Halima and her fathers name is John smith. Then it should be as follows:

Halima bint John or Halima bint John Smith

i.e. Halima daughter of John Smith

Important note: In Islam it is important to know ones lineage. Therefore it is forbidden for Muslim women to change their last name to that of their husbands. They cannot be their husbands daughter just because they married him.
